Finished CertainTeed Landmark shingle roof with hip and ridge cap on a Baker, LA home

A One-Day Tear-Off on a Baker Brick Home

This single-story brick home in Baker, in East Baton Rouge Parish, was still wearing an older brown shingle roof. Roof Rescue walked the property and photographed every side of the house first, then came back for a full tear-off and finished the new roof in a single install day.

What went on the roof

  • Full tear-off of the old shingles and underlayment, down to the wood deck.
  • A deck check across every plane once it was bare, with the crew measuring the sheathing before anything new went down.
  • TriBuilt synthetic roofing underlayment over the full deck, with ice and water shield called for in the valleys and transitions.
  • CertainTeed Landmark architectural shingles in Weathered Wood, finished with CertainTeed Shadow Ridge hip and ridge cap.
  • New drip edge, pipe flashing and box vents, set new rather than reused.

Materials on site before the tear-off was done

The Landmark bundles, Shadow Ridge cap, underlayment rolls, coil nails, pipe flashings and two new box vents were staged on pallets beside the driveway that morning. Having everything on the ground before the old roof was off is part of what lets a crew close a roof up the same day it opens it.

Down to the deck

Once the old shingles and felt came off, the crew had a clear look at the sheathing across the main roof and the valley where it meets the metal patio cover out back. Going to bare wood is the only way to see the deck a new roof will be nailed into. Laying new shingles over old ones would have hidden all of it.

Dried in with synthetic underlayment

The crew covered the deck in TriBuilt synthetic underlayment and started shingling while the last of it was still going down. Synthetic lies flat, does not wrinkle when it gets wet, and holds up to foot traffic across a long Louisiana workday. The scope also called for ice and water shield in the valleys and transitions, the spots where water concentrates and roofs most often start to leak.

CertainTeed Landmark in Weathered Wood

The finished roof is CertainTeed Landmark, a dimensional architectural shingle, in the Weathered Wood color printed on the bundles delivered to this job. It gives the roof depth and shadow lines instead of a flat sheet of color, and the grey-brown blend sits well against the tan and brown brick. The hips and ridge were capped with CertainTeed Shadow Ridge.

Roughly 31 squares, one install day

The roof was estimated at roughly 31 squares of material. The first frames from the job were taken early in the morning, materials were staged by mid-morning, the deck was dried in by late morning, and the finished roof was photographed that same afternoon.
