What went on the roof

Why the tear-off matters

Shingles laid over an old roof hide whatever is underneath. Going to the deck is the only way to find soft spots and worn boards, and it is what the shingle manufacturer expects when the warranty terms are written.

A layover also adds a second layer of weight to a structure that was engineered for one, and it buries the flashing details where leaks usually start. It is cheaper on the day and more expensive over the life of the roof.

The deck gets looked at board by board

Once the old shingles and felt came off, the crew walked the deck and inspected it panel by panel before any new material went down. That is the step that decides whether a roof lasts its full service life, and it is the one that cannot be done from the ground or from a drone photo.

Anything questionable gets addressed while the roof is open. Covering a soft board with a good shingle does not fix the board, it just hides it until the ceiling downstairs finds it first.

Underlayment, valleys and penetrations

The deck was dried in with synthetic underlayment rather than felt. Synthetic sheds water better, it does not wrinkle when it gets wet, and it holds up to being walked on through a hot Louisiana install.

From there the details got rebuilt rather than reused. New pipe boots went on every penetration, new vents were set, and the valleys and ridge line were finished as part of the same system. Roofs rarely fail in the middle of a plane. They fail at the edges, the valleys and the penetrations, which is exactly where reused parts cost you.

An extra layer of felt, found on the way down

The tear-off turned up more than one layer of felt across the deck, billed out at 36 squares of additional layer labour. A roof that has been built up rather than taken back to the deck hides whatever the previous layer was hiding, which is the whole argument for going to bare wood.

New seamless gutters to go with the roof

The scope did not stop at the shingles. Roof Rescue also hung roughly 100 feet of seamless gutter with two downspouts and leaf guards as part of the same job.

Gutters and roofs fail together more often than people expect. Water that cannot get away from the eave finds the fascia, then the decking, then the soffit. Replacing the roof and leaving tired gutters underneath it is a job half finished, so it is worth pricing the two together while the crew is already on site.

An algae-resistant shingle for a humid climate

The roof was finished in CertainTeed Patriot architectural shingles in Aged Wood. Patriot is a dimensional shingle, so it carries more weight per square than a three-tab and gives the roof shadow line and depth instead of a flat sheet of colour.

The algae-resistant designation matters more here than it would further north. South Louisiana stays warm and damp most of the year, and that is the climate that streaks a roof black along the north-facing slopes. AR shingles are built to resist it.
