Saint Gabriel Project: New Stucco Wall Flashing and Landmark Shingles

Rated 5 out of 5

Chase and his team recently repaired my roof after a terrible thunderstorm. It has been several weeks since the repair, and we have not had one drop of rain in our home. Roof Rescue is an honest and professional roofing company you can have confidence in; that's rare in today's world.

Completed CertainTeed Landmark roof with new hip and ridge caps and pipe flashings on the Saint Gabriel, Louisiana home

New Wall Flashing and Landmark Shingles on a Saint Gabriel Home

This brick and stucco home in Saint Gabriel has roof planes that run into its stucco walls in several places, and those meeting points were where the old roof showed the most wear. Roof Rescue documented the roof in February, then tore it down to the deck, replaced the wall flashing and installed a new CertainTeed Landmark roof in a single install day in April.

What went on the roof

  • Full tear-off of the old shingles and underlayment, down to the deck.
  • A deck check before the dry-in, with the scope covering replacement of any sheathing that was not sound.
  • TriBuilt synthetic roofing underlayment across the full deck, with ice and water shield called for in the valleys and transitions.
  • New metal flashing along the stucco walls where the roof planes end against them.
  • CertainTeed Landmark architectural shingles, finished with CertainTeed Shadow Ridge hip and ridge cap.
  • New pipe flashings, a box vent and a ridge vent, set as the new roof went on.

What the February visit found

Before the job was scheduled, Roof Rescue walked the roof and photographed it. The shingles had weathered to a flat brown with granule wear showing on the hips and ridges, and the metal flashing where the roof meets the stucco walls had rusted, with old sealant cracking along the seams. Wall transitions are where water most often gets behind a roof, so they were the priority on this job.

Down to the deck

On install day the crew stripped the old roof to bare wood. That opened up the deck along the stucco walls, where the old flashing was still in place, and let the crew check and measure the sheathing before the dry-in. The scope priced replacement for any decking that was not sound, so soft spots could be fixed while the roof was open instead of being buried under new shingles.

Rebuilding the wall transitions

With the old metal off, new flashing went in along the stucco walls and the new shingles were laid up to it. The scope also called for ice and water shield at the transitions, the spots where water concentrates. On a home like this one, where several roof planes end against a wall instead of at an open edge, those details carry a lot of the load.

CertainTeed Landmark with a vented ridge

The finished roof is CertainTeed Landmark, a dimensional architectural shingle, capped on the hips and ridges with CertainTeed Shadow Ridge. A ridge vent runs along the peaks so hot attic air has a way out, which matters for the shingles and for the rooms underneath them through a Louisiana summer.

Roughly 43 squares, one install day

The roof measured out at roughly 43 squares of material. Materials were staged before 7 a.m., the tear-off and dry-in ran through the morning, and the finished roof was photographed that evening.
