Finished CertainTeed Landmark AR shingle roof in Weathered Wood on a Baton Rouge, LA home

A Tear-Off That Found Two Layers of Felt

This home in Baton Rouge, in East Baton Rouge Parish, came to Roof Rescue for a full roof replacement. The crew opened the old roof, found more underneath it than one layer of felt, replaced the soft decking they uncovered at an eave, and finished the new roof in a single install day.

What went on the roof

  • Full tear-off of the old shingles and both layers of felt, down to the wood deck.
  • New plywood decking where the old sheathing at the eave had rotted.
  • TriBUILT synthetic roofing underlayment over the full deck, with ice and water shield called for in the valleys and transitions.
  • CertainTeed Landmark AR architectural shingles in Weathered Wood, finished with CertainTeed Shadow Ridge hip and ridge cap.
  • New drip edge, pipe flashings and turbine vents, set new rather than reused.

Two layers of felt under the old shingles

When the crew pulled back the first course, they found two layers of felt underlayment where a roof normally has one, and marked it in the photo record before going further. It does not change what a new roof needs, but it does add weight and labor to the tear-off, and it is the kind of thing you only learn by opening the roof. Both layers came off with the shingles.

Rotted decking at the eave

Going to bare wood showed the deck was solid across most of the roof, but one eave had dark, water-stained sheathing that had gone soft. The crew cut it out and installed new plywood sheets before any underlayment went down. Nailing new shingles into rotted wood is how a new roof starts to fail early, so this is the step a tear-off exists for.

Dried in with synthetic underlayment

Once the deck was sound, the crew covered it in TriBUILT synthetic underlayment and staged the shingle bundles along the ridge. Synthetic lies flat, holds up to foot traffic, and does not wrinkle when it gets wet. The scope also called for ice and water shield in the valleys and transitions, where water concentrates and leaks most often start.

CertainTeed Landmark AR in Weathered Wood

The finished roof is CertainTeed Landmark AR, a dimensional architectural shingle, in the Weathered Wood color printed on the bundles delivered to this job. The AR line is built to resist the dark algae streaks that show up on so many roofs in this humid climate. The hips and ridge were capped with CertainTeed Shadow Ridge, and new turbine vents and pipe flashings went in with the shingles.

About 43 squares, one install day

The roof was estimated at about 43 squares of material. Every photo from the delivery of materials through the finished roof was taken on the same day.
